The Faculty of Science was first established in 1975 under the name of Faculty of Science and Engineering with Law No. 1873. Its name was changed to the Faculty of Science and Literature in 1982, and it continued its educational, instructional, and research activities under this name until 2022. On July 26, 2022, with Presidential Decree No. 5868, it was restructured under the name of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
What About Our Qualifications and Academic Vision ?
Our Faculty aims to train successful individuals equipped with science knowledge, capable of researching, analyzing, and initiating, and have the necessary qualifications required by the era by providing our students with solid academic infrastructure along with various elective courses in different subjects in addition to basic courses offered. We aim to become a pioneering faculty in national and international higher education with education, science, technology, and art activities by training individuals who can create valuable inventions and patents for the scientific community, respond to the needs of society, love their country and nation, and perform their work with passion.
What Facilities and Opportunities Do We offer?
Our Faculty is in a central location on the Kurupelit Campus, the main campus of Ondokuz Mayıs University. Thanks to its current location, our students can easily access many faculties, student cafeterias, libraries, social activity areas, and living centers. We have distinguished academic staff in all the departments of our Faculty, with experience and knowledge to provide our students with all the competencies they will need in the future. Our Faculty has established a culture of quality within the framework of the strategic plan and made it traceable. Through the activities carried out in this framework, all of our departments (Biology, Physics, Statistics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Molecular Biology, and Genetics) within our Faculty have been accredited by FEDEK. The Faculty, ensuring the education and training of future scientists, has 59 Professors, 15 Associate Professors, 17 Assistant Professors, 4 Lecturers, and 26 Research Assistants as of 2023, who share their experience and knowledge with 1304 students. In addition, a total of 26 administrative staff contribute to the functioning and processes of the Faculty. The Faculty has a total closed area of over 36,000 m2, including lecture halls, classrooms, workshops, and production facilities (Campus Chemistry), as well as education and research laboratories and offices.
What Are Our Programs and Job Opportunities?
The Faculty of Science trains qualified individuals in many areas of science with its departments of Biology, Physics, Statistics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Molecular Biology, and Genetics. Optional foreign language preparation courses are provided in our 4-year programs. Our Faculty, which prioritizes research and development, constantly renews itself to ensure that students become qualified graduates. The Faculty of Science provides students with opportunities in theoretical and practical applications with its four computer labs, six student labs, and 86 scientific research labs to equip them as competent individuals. The departments of our Faculty have signed protocols with different departments in other faculties to enable our students to receive double major and minor programs provided that they meet the requirements; provided that the requirements are met, final-year students are included in the Vocational Practice Program to gain experience in public institutions and organizations as well as the private sector. For this purpose, protocols have been signed between our departments and related institutions. With this practice, which is a first among the science faculties in our country, successful students studying in all departments of our Faculty will have the opportunity to gain professional experience in their fields, making it easier to enter into professional life.
What Exchange Programs Do We Offer to Our Students?
The Faculty has student exchange agreements within the framework of the Farabi, Mevlâna, and Erasmus + Programs. Our students actively benefit from these exchange programs and contribute to expanding their perspectives on their fields of expertise with the experiences they gain. The Faculty of Sciences offers many different opportunities for academic development and provides suitable environments for students to develop in social, cultural, and sports areas. Sports activities, such as inter-departmental chess and dart tournaments are organized in winter, and inter-departmental football and volleyball tournaments in spring. In addition, student societies established within the university are essential in supporting the professional, cultural, and social atmosphere. Together with current students, graduates with work experience organize meetings under the coordination of student societies. Our students have organized numerous events and activities within these communities so far.
In What Ways Do We Support the Professional, Cultural and Social Atmosphere?
One of the fundamental goals of our Faculty is to meet the need for scientists in the field of basic sciences in Türkiye. In this regard, our students choose to pursue graduate studies at various universities domestically or internationally and can become academic staff. Additionally, our graduates have job opportunities in various fields such as biotechnology companies, industrial firms, public or private educational institutions, banks, organizations related to occupational safety, companies involved in vaccine production and drug development, cosmetic, leather, glass, plastic and other industrial organizations, Turkish Atomic Energy Authority, Turkish Statistical Institute, defense industry related organizations, Turkish Standards Institute, food control laboratories, companies that prepare environmental impact assessment reports, and health institutions and facilities. .
